BMW Megacity will be an expensive vehicle, Autocar reports

Autocar, a UK magazine, quoted an official BMW source about the pricing of the Megacity Vehicle — BMW’s first fully electric car. The Megacity vehicle is being developed under the Project i umbrella and will be going into production in 2013. The vehicle will be marketed under the BMW “i” sub-brand dedicated to sustainable mobility for the future.

Autocar confirms that the Megacity Vehicle will be an expensive car. Their inside source said that it will cost higher than Nissan’s superstar Leaf which costs £23,350. However, as technology advances, the price will eventually come done in the future.

“Our Megacity Vehicle will be significantly lighter than conventional cars and, in terms of sustainability, will set a new standard across the entire value-added chain,” said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. Adrian Van Hooydonk, Head of Design, also said that the Megacity will be a premium vehicle.

The Megacity Vehicle will a two-door, four-seater car. It will be around 157 inches. Two additional models will be offered in the future. In 2015, the two-door, two-seat Intracity Vehicle will be launched. In 2017, the four-door, five-seater Urban Commuter Vehicle will be released.

The Megacity will run on a lithium-ion battery with 35 kWh of capacity placed below the vehicle’s floor. Power will be directed to the rear-wheels through a rear-mounted 150-hp electric motor. Driving range is at 100 miles and top speed at 95 mph.
