BMW may start to lease, not sell, the Megacity Electric Vehicle

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Group sales and marketing, said in an interview for Automotive News Europe that BMW may lease out its Megacity Vehicle on a short-term basis, rather than offering it for sale. Because of the high production costs, Dr. Robert Reithoffer, BMW CEO, said that the Megacity will be an expensive vehicle. As a solution to this, BMW now considers juts offering the vehicle for lease so more consumers can afford it.

“We’re looking for an alternative to traditional purchase or leasing of a vehicle,” sales chief Ian Robertson said. ”We don’t want to sell the car, but rather the use of the car,” he said. The ‘Car to Go’ concept “is an interesting approach, more and more people in large cities are looking for an alternative to the ownership of a vehicle,” Robertson added.

Automotive News also reports that the Megacity Electric Vehicle’s official name will be announced in February 21, 2011.
