The BMW M5 has been spied for the first time in blue exterior paint during its final testing stages. According to a report by MotorTrend states that BMW engineers has trouble fitting the M Dual Clutch Transmission (M DCT) to the F10 M5. It has something to do with the torque being too high for the M DCT to handle with the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 delivering around 550 horsepower.
BMW may be left no choice but to offer the upcoming 2012 M5 solely with an automatic transmission. Adding larger actuators would have been an alternative solution but that would slow the gearbox’s response time. A total revision will be the only solution, and this will take a lot of time and money for BMW. This started the rumors that the F10 M5 will only be offered with the ZF 8-speed automatic (sequential with paddle-shifters) gearbox. The 2012 M5 is expected to make its debut in production trim at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
