The The ActiveHybrid 5 Concept, first 5 Series hybrid vehicle from BMW, was first shown at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. That model was a preview of the production model that will be sold to the market in 2012. During a test cycle, the vehicle was spotted at the roads of California, USA. The word “HYBRIDâ€Â printed at the trunklid of the prototype was noticeable.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 will be the first hybrid from BMW with an in-line six-cylinder engine. It will be powered by a 3.0 liter straight-six N55 gasoline engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric drive. The electric motor has a boost function that supports the gasoline engine. The energy comes from a high-voltage battery positioned at the back of the car. The electric motor develops maximum output of 40 kW.
This all-electric, zero-emission, power efficient vehicle will deliver 300 horsepower with a standard fuel consumption of around 8 liters per 100 kilometers.
