If you’re interested in purchasing one, the magazine gives a few important highlights of the vehicle that will make you want to go back to the M5 at least one more time.

So you’re one of the lucky few to have ordered a brand-new BMW M5 and you can’t wait to take delivery. Or you’re interested in attaching your name to the next available M5—we’re told that the first few months’ worth of M5s are spoken for—and want to see what all the fuss is about before signing away $90K or so. Or you just want the chance to drive BMW’s latest M-branded luxury Frankenstein. The BMW Performance Driving School has the means to scratch you where you itch, regardless of which scenario applies.

Following the 45-minute chalk talk, we moved to morning exercises at the Spartanburg test track. A wet skidpad and an M5 with stability control disabled were our tools for practicing over- and understeer. Repeatedly spinning the M5 wasn’t confidence inspiring, although there’s no better place to do it. My first driving-school lesson: Powersliding is hard.

Next on the docket was a chance to apply everything we’d learned to that point during hot laps in the M5 and M3. Back in the M5, with M Dynamic mode active and dry pavement for a change, my confidence began to rise. In seeking full use of the twin-turbo V-8’s power my not-yet-smooth driving style elicited some twists and contortions under hard acceleration, but the electronics did their job. Touching 105 mph in fourth gear left me just enough time to get the most from the carbon-ceramic brakes (which won’t be available on the M5 until next year) on the back straight.
