BMW introduced their first tri-turbo engine powering four models in the new BMW M Performance Automobiles line at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The BMW M550d xDrive (sedan and touring), BMW X5 M50d and X6 M50d all has this engine that delivers 381 horsepower and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque. The highlight is more power at low revs. However, some BMW owners still find the Tri-Turbo insufficient, especially with the all-wheel drive combination because it creates increased weight and friction in the drivetrain which affects the performance.

Rumor has it that BMW is working to solve these problems. BMW engineers are working on the first update for the new engine and it might result to a 420 hp figure to be used on the 5 Series (F10 LCI) facelift due next year. This might just give the increased performance that the vehicles need.
