Engine Comparison: BMW 4.4L V8 twin-turbo vs Mercedes-Benz 5.5L V8 twin-turbo

There have been many car comparisons between BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but it’s about time that we talk about their engines. Let us see how BMW’s famous 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engine used by the BMW X5 M and X6 M sports activity vehicles compares to the 5.5 liter V8 twin-turbo from Mercedes-Benz.

TopSpeed puts these two performance engines to the test. They base their comparison on this tenet: horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.

BMW’s 4.4 liter V8 is already being used in the market but the 5.5 liter V8 by Mercedes-Benz has not made its debut yet. Mercedes Benz’ 5.5 liter V8 has an increased horsepower of 537. The output of the torque has also been increased to 900 Nm — definitely higher than their 6.3 V8 with just 630 Nm.

BMW is ready to compete with 4.4 liter V8 engine that is capable of 555 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque. We will see this engine in action when the 2011 BMW M5 is released. BMW is working on the M5 and it is still on the testing stages so that its power-to-weight ratio may be improved.

Fuel consumption comparison is not yet available. But one thing’s for sure, a race between these two engines will definitely be interesting.
