Its more of a paradowx that this vehicle ended up a 2 Series because the German automaker said last year that even numbers (6, 4, and 2) were for the coupés and convertibles including 6 Series Coupe and Convertible and Gran Coupe, or the X6, the 4 Series and now the 2 Series Coupe.

However, the decision of naming this as a 2 Series is because they feel that the 2 Series Active Tourer deserves to be a 2 Series because it’s bigger than the 1 Series, and will be more expensive.

Instead of choosing a different name from the many trademarked by BMW, this was the most logical decision on the table. A senior BMW manager tells Top Gear that the company went through a long list of options and “hit a brick wall.”

All nameplates with a letter-number combination were already trademarked by other manufacturers – either car makers or others whose sphere overlaps. Only the Y Series is not available and calling the car BMW Y1 didn’t sound very good.

So at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the main stage will be reserved to the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, a model that represents a new era for BMW.
