BMW will use more aluminum to reduce vehicle weight

BMW will be using more aluminum in production to reduce vehicle weight. It is now a worldwide trend to  make cars lightweight because of its fuel efficiency benefits. Aside from being lighter than steel, aluminum can also be recycled — which makes this move by BMW sustainable.

Frank Wienstroth, from BMW supply chain and sustainability communications, said that we will see more aluminum doors, hoods, and other structural components for BMW. But the use of aluminum will still vary upon the specific vehicle’s need. Steel will still be used as to produce most of their conventional vehicles, but the efforts of using carbon fiber and aluminum will continue to progress.

Recent announcements confirmed that the 5 Series ActiveHybrid concept will go into full-scale production next year. This car will need to be lightweight, like other electric vehicles, and will most likely use aluminum in production. This move will also reduce production costs for BMW.
