Singapore. BMW Asia is hosting an exclusive BMW xDrive event at the tropical Lazarus Island (a private standalone isle off Sentosa) from 13 to 16 March 2014. The event has effectively transformed the island into a dedicated test-drive circuit for participants to experience the superiority of the BMW X models in a safe, yet exciting off-road environment.

 

Designed with simulated obstacles, participants will get to drive on off-road terrain that they will not usually get to experience during normal driving in Singapore. The undulating terrain and obstacle courses serve to demonstrate the intelligent BMW xDrive technology that powers the full range of BMW X Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) models, including the high-performance BMW X6 M, as well as the tri-turbo diesel-powered BMW X6 M50d.

 

“From the very beginning, an all-wheel drive system in conjunction with superior suspension technology has always been the BMW X models’ formula for success. The BMW xDrive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system that monitors the driving situation constantly and distributes power smoothly between the axles to ensure the best possible traction at all times. This enables the driver to enjoy safety and agility even on fast bends. BMW xDrive shifts power distribution variably between the front and rear axles to best suit the driving situation and road condition.

 

Under normal circumstances, it distributes 60 percent of the drive power to the rear axles to provide handling typical of a rear-wheel drive. This ensures that the hallmark BMW steering precision is virtually free from drive forces in all-wheel drive models. When met with extreme conditions, the BMW xDrive can automatically direct up to 100 percent of its drive forces to wheels with grip, either at the front or rear axle, to enable the driver to start up effortlessly even on slippery surfaces or steep hills.

 

BMW xDrive technology also “thinks” a step ahead. As the car is being driven, the BMW xDrive analyses data from the on-board electronics systems such as speed, steering angle, torque output and other key factors – and calculates the best way to move in a bid to prevent any oversteer or understeer. At the first sign of understeering, drive power to the front axle is reduced, whereas when oversteering is detected, it will then direct more power to the front axle. Thanks to this dynamic redistribution of power, vehicle stability returns to normal even before the driver notices anything amiss.

 

Driving on a winding road or taking a fast bend in dynamic style is particularly enjoyable with BMW xDrive, as the car gets guided along the curve. BMW xDrive ensures that none of the drive power is wasted on a loss of traction as a result.

With its outstanding versatility, BMW xDrive not only enhances traction in difficult road conditions but also improves overall driving dynamics. In a car equipped with BMW xDrive, the driver has the assurance that even under adverse road-surface conditions the torque split is always instantly optimised to provide the best possible traction and stability.

The BMW X5 presented in 1999 laid the foundation for a whole new genre of vehicle – the Sports Activity Vehicle. The launch of the BMW X3 in 2004 likewise started a new chapter in the all-wheel drive history of the brand: for the first time, an all-wheel drive system was presented under the name of BMW xDrive. Today, the entire range of BMW X models is powered by the intelligent BMW xDrive technology to offer maximum utility space, safety and sheer driving pleasure.

 

The following is a list of the BMW X models that are driven at the BMW xDrive island event.

 

BMW X5

This third generation BMW X5 is an all-round Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that is equipped to meet the most exacting and varied demands. The BMW X5 literally started the premium SAV segment and has since become a global best-seller of its class with more than 1.3 million units sold worldwide since the first generation X5.

 

The new BMW X5 is the lightest and most aerodynamic car of its class through the use of intelligent lightweight construction techniques and aerodynamic optimisation.

 

The new BMW X5 features the Dynamic Performance Control. When combined with the BMW xDrive, the drive power split can be even more finely controlled. Dynamic Performance Control, likewise electronically controlled, is integrated in the rear differential. In combination with BMW xDrive it takes handling dynamics and directional stability to new levels. Dynamic Performance Control seamlessly varies the drive power split between the rear wheels (torque vectoring), with significant benefits in terms of steering response and track-holding at all speeds. The stabilising action of Dynamic Performance Control is not affected if the driver lifts off the accelerator while cornering.

 

BMW X5 xDrive50i is powered by a new-generation V8 engine with up to 450 hp and comes with a maximum torque of 650 Nm, which is delivered from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm. The new BMW X5 xDrive50i completes the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.0 seconds. It has an average fuel consumption of 10.5 l/100 km and CO2 emissions at 244 g/km (per average EU test cycle).

 

BMW X5 xDrive30d, with its six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, turbocharging and common rail direct injection, is able to generate a maximum power output of 258 hp and a peak torque of 560 Nm from 1,500 to 3,000 rpm. The BMW X5 xDrive30d has a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds. It has an average fuel consumption of 6.2 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 164 g/km (per average EU test cycle).

 

BMW X6

The BMW X6 is the world’s first ever Sports Activity Coupé, with a unique combination of sporty dynamics and supreme versatility. BMW X6 is a distinctive model within the premium segment of all-wheel-drive automobiles. Its exceptional standing and ongoing popularity is due to both its highly expressive design, combining the athletic and elegant lines of a coupé with the supremacy of a BMW X model.

 

BMW X6 xDrive35i is powered by a 3.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo engine that generates up to 306 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. It has a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.7 seconds, and an average fuel consumption of 10.1l/100km and CO2 emissions of 236 g/km (per average EU test cycle).

 

BMW X3

The BMW X3 founded the new mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment with its launch. It is an epitome of sporty dynamics, premium ambience and robust agility, coupled with low fuel consumption and emissions. It is equipped with the best interior and boot measurements and the greatest versatility in its class.

 

BMW X3 xDrive20i comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit with a power output of 184 hp and maximum torque of 270 Nm from 1,250 to 4,500 rpm. It can sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds. It has an average fuel consumption of 7.5 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 175 g/km (per average EU test cycle).

 

BMW M Performance Automobiles: Tri-Turbo Diesel-Powered

BMW M Performance Automobiles benefit from the unique expertise of BMW M engineers, with specially-tuned powertrain, suspension and steering system. This results in vehicles that offer an exhilarating combination of sheer dynamism, comfort and everyday usability.

 

BMW X6 M50d is powered by the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine, and is packed with a maximum output of 381 hp and a peak torque of 740 Nm. The BMW X6 M50d can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds, while maintaining average fuel consumption at

7.7 l/100km and CO2 emissions at 204 g/km (per average EU test cycle).

 

BMW M: High Performance for the racetrack

BMW X6 M is the first high-performance Sports Activity Coupé that comes with outstanding dynamism and athletic performance that is typical of a BMW M car. It has an average fuel consumption of 13.9 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 325 g/km (per average EU test cycle).
