BMW protects consumers by not sharing connected cars data

Financial Times reports that there is an increases pressure on automakers like BMW to share their connected car data with technology and advertising companies, but the German automaker is among the ones who says “no”.

“There’s plenty of people out there saying: ‘give us all the data you’ve got and we can tell you what we can do with it’,” BMW’s Sales and Marketing Director, Ian Robertson told the Financial Times, adding that this included “Silicon Valley” companies, as well as advertising groups. “And we’re saying: ‘No thank you’.” Robertson has not named the companies requesting the data.

BMW’s technology allows for an advanced recording of information such as geo-location and speed, information about the car occupants, among many others.

Advertising companies who create maps would greatly benefit if data is shared, since it will easily guide target ads to users as they move around.

BMW says there’s a firewall in place that protects the car’s data from any uninvited hackers, and to ensure the data of BMW owners are secure.
