City of Leipzig gets 50 BMW i3 electric cars

BMW has handed over 50 BMW i3 electric vehicles to the City of Leipzig. Mayor Burkhard Jung has personally took over possession of the i3s from BMW plant manager Hans-Peter Kemser and Alexander Thorwirth, Head of BMW Direct Sales Germany. The City of Leipzig will lease the vehicles for a period of two years.

The vehicles will be used by LVV, the city of Leipzig’s transport and supply company, as well as Stadtwerke Leipzig, the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, the municipal waterworks and at the city council. A total of around 9,000 users will have access to the i3s.” In parallel, BMW is supporting the expansion of the city’s charging infrastructure and in the unification of interfaces and payment systems.

For Mayor Burkhard Jung the i3s’ acquisition has a great importance for a holistic sustainable mobility concept of the city: “BMW is building in Leipzig on the mobility of the future. Electromobility is quiet, clean and environmentally friendly. Especially for us, in a growing city, we need a new understanding of mobility.”

BMW has been adding i3 fleets all over the world, starting with Copenhagen – 400 cars – and Munich police.

More cities are expected to join the electromobility movement in 2016.
