Will BMW’s Hydrogen Car Become a Reality Soon?

BMW has shown affection towards hydrogen fuel cells. Not all responded well to German manufacturer’s attitude, but it seems like criticism isn’t going to change their mind.

Bavarians are not the first one on the track to something new and exciting. Japanese Toyota has 23 years long history with hydrogen fuel, and Honda, Audi, and General Motors also support its usage and are working on the technology. It all proves that BMW is on the right path.

The sole desire to work with an advanced fuel technology is, unfortunately, not enough. There is still a lack of infrastructure that prevents the mass production of hydrogen cars. Every revolution is difficult, and the problems that exist now are likely to be overcome in the future. Craig Scott, the national manager of Toyota, said that they are aware of the perspective and the time needed to make such a big change. The results are expected in a decade or two, which is a reasonable time frame for a change that certainly can’t happen overnight. One important step is to create a hydrogen network, meaning that the supporting companies should unite and create big results together.

While some disagree about investing time and money in hydrogen fuel, stating that those resources should be spent on EV charging infrastructure, Toyota and BMW believe that there is room for both of these alternative fuel solutions.

EV cars are still not convenient for everyday use. They need frequent recharching and it simply takes too long. Right now, hydrogen cars have an advantage in terms of convenience: they fuel faster and can go around 300 miles without the need to stop and refuel.

It seems like BMW, as well as some other automakers, are very serious about hydrogen cell fuel technology. It might be even closer than we expect, as the companies are constantly working on developing the infrastructure and are very determined to reach the goal – it’s just the matter of when will they make it.
