The MINI brand is known for making the most use of small spaces. At the Salone del Mobile 2016, MINI is showing how this can be done in the “MINI LIVING” installation that they are presenting. The installation in Milan offers a great idea that can serve as a sustainable solution to a big problem of urban cities: shortage of affordable yet attractive housing.
MINI is no stranger to solving city problems. In fact, MINI targets customers living in urban cities. That being said, the lack of space (e.g. small roads, limited parking) is something that they always consider when creating a vehicle. It must be small and compact, yet useful and delivers optimal performance.
MINI’s idea is a modern shared-living concept that can be used today and by the future generations, says Esther Bahne, Head of Brand Strategy and Business Innovation at MINI. It will be a micro-neighbourhood of 30 square meter apartments which makes sharing space easy for the people who will live there.
To maximize the space, MINI installed fold-out shelving modules in the walls of the apartment. The modules contain everything that a person will need in daily living: kitchen unit, a workbench and even a music system. To access these objects and functions, all you need to do is to pull out and open the modules. To make it even more functional, the interior space of the apartment can be arranged and reconfigured in various ways. This allows the people to utilize the space in case they need to have activities inside the apartment. Fold out the kitchen and the music system and there you have a party!
To ensure privacy, MINI LIVING incorporates the concept of “do not disturb” where occupants can feel safe and secure in the apartment. They can easily switch from private to communal space.
MINI believes that shared-living will be an even stronger trend in the next years as space becomes more limited. The footprint is compact for “MINI LIVING”, and yet people can interact with each other in a healthy and liveable environment.
The MINI LIVING installation will be on display from April 12 to April 17, 2016 at 18 Via Vigevano, Milan, Italy during the Salone del Mobile.
