BMW proves its commitment to being ahead of the electric mobility game by announcing improvements to its compact electric car. For starters, the new BMW i3 will carry a more powerful battery (94 Ah) which allows it to extend its driving range of up to 200 kms in normal driving conditions. That’s more than 50% increase in battery capacity and range!
Starting this summer, the new BMW i3 version will have a 94 Ah battery that has a capacity of 33 kilowatt hours (kWh). This is made possible due to the higher storage density of the battery’s lithium ion cells. Even with this big improvement, the size of the battery didn’t increase. It remains to be the same compact size.
Using the standard NEDC cycle, the new and improved BMW i3 will now deliver 300 kms when it used to be just 190 kms. BMW says that this range can be achieved even if subjected to bad weather conditions, or when the air conditioning or heating is turned on. The 200 km range can be achieved by a full charged battery.
In terms of driving performance figures of the hybrid synchronous electric motor, it remains to be at 125 kW/170 hp. 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 7.3 seconds. Its electricity consumption is 12.6 kWh/100 km (NEDC). The 2-cylinder petrol engine is able to keep the charge level of the battery while driving s an additional range of 150 kms achievable. With these numbers, the BMW i3 is still the most-efficient and sportiest electric vehicle in its segment.
The BMW i3 with 60 Ah battery will still be available in the model range. Moreover, the model variant with Range Extender will also be available for both battery versions. BMW wanted to expand the line-up and not to replace any of the existing offerings.
BMW i also offers new and more powerful charging stations that can be used for home garages. They are also offering new equipment options such as having their first-generation battery retrofitted to the BMW i3.
