The next BMW F90 M5: All you need to know

The new M5 is built under the codename F90. Prototypes have been spotted in testing sessions and even in public roads around the Nurburgring. The official launch will be 2017 and we cannot wait for this super sporty middle class athlete to grace the roads. Here’s what you need to know.

The next BMW F90 M5: All you need to know

For starters, the F90 M5 has received the weight loss treatment. Exotic materials have been introduced such as high strength steels or carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) that allows it to be significantly lighter. It is expected to be 100 kilograms less than the current F10 M5. The weight savings will definitely improve the driving dynamics of the new M5.

Now on to the engine. BMW will still use the V8 TwinTurbo engine which replaced the iconic V10 S85 5.0-liter rider on the M5 E60. There were rumors that the engine will downsize to the F90 M5 a powerplant in the M4 but the fact that it only outputs 500 horsepower makes that incompatible with the new M5. The M5 30 Jahre Edition already delivers 600 horsepower. The V8 for the new M5 will be optimized to deliver maximum power at a wider rpm range, yet the power won’t exceed by much the 600 hp mark. A 620 hp figure is possible, but it will most likely be between 550 to 605 hp.

The all-wheel drive system will also be in the F90 M5. The xDrive system will be rear-biased and is developed specifically for the M5. Don’t worry, the driving dynamics of a rear-wheel drive sportscar will be retained with effective grip and traction on all four wheels as an addition. The standard transmission is likely to be the same M-dual-clutch transmission as the current F10 M5. A manual gearbox may still be available for the U.S. market.

Technology wise, we know that the new M54 will have autonomous driving, Driving Assistant Plus, Parking Assistant Plus and Remote Control Parking and Connected Drive services that can be found in the new 7 Series. Optional laser lights will also be available, with OLED taillights as standard.
