Drag Race: Vorsteiner BMW i8 vs. Porsche 911 GT3 at GoldRush Rally

The 2016 GoldRush Rally is ongoing and teams are already traveling from Boston to Los Angeles to reach the finish line. So much fun is happening during the race and this mostly includes high-octane gas, horsepower and a drag strip. Now that’s very fun indeed! At first look, the Vorsteiner BMW i8 may seem out of place. It may seem peculiar to see it beside Ferraris or Lamborghinis. However, in this drag race video, it takes on the Porsche 911 GT3 and proves that it is more than just an electric car.

The Vorsteiner BMW i8 is powered by a hybrid powertrain and contrary to what most people believe, it actually delivers an incredible performance. With 357 horsepower up its sleeve and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque, it can compete with other supercars in the market.

In this drag race, the Porsche 911 GT3 takes the advantageous position. It delivers 469 horsepower and 439 Nm (324 lb-ft) of torque. This is hooked up to a 7-speed PDK gearbox that sends all of it to the rear wheels. Standstill to 62 mph is achieved in just 3.5 seconds.

The underdog BMW i8 has more torque on its side and all-wheel drive. However, it doesn’t deliver the same power. The difference is 114 PS (112 hp) between the two cars. Even if it has one of the best runs achieved by BMW’s test pilots, the vehicle can only reach 0-62 mph in 4.4. That can only be achieved when the battery is full.

Even if that’s the case, the Vorsteiner i8’s driver and owner did not back down at year’s GoldRush Rally. It took on the drag race with all that it can at the zMAX Dragway in North Carolina. In the end, the Vorsteiner i8 performed better than expected!
