BMW i8 Wins Engine of the Year Award 2016

BMW managed to win the 2016 Engine of the Year awards once again! The results were announced yesterday. It was the only win this time for BMW but rest assured that it is a big win. The process of selecting a winner each year involves an expert panel of 63 judges from 31 countries. They select the best powerplants in various categories.

BMW i8 Wins Engine of the Year Award 2016

The overall winner for 2016 was Ferrari’s 3.9-liter turbocharged V8 fitted on the new 488 GTB while the 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine on the BMW i8 won the 1.4-liter to 1.8-liter category. The BMW i8 engine also claimed the overall victory and two class wins last year in the same prestigious contest. The innovation that BMW put in making this power plant definitely showed.

BMW is also no stranger to these awards. Since the launch of the International Engine of the Year Awards back in 1999, a total of 67 class and overall wins have gone to power units developed for BMW models.

The plug-in hybrid drive system of the BMW i8 is a mix of fuel economy and the performance of a sports car. The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 delivers 231 horsepower and drives the rear wheels. On the other hand, the 131 horsepower electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery. This can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket and sends its power to the front axle. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.4 seconds, yet combined fuel consumption is at 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers (122 mpg) plus 11.9 kWh of electricity. This is equal to CO2 emissions of 49 grams per kilometer while still offering ultimate driving pleasure.
