Rolling Drag Race: BMW M4 vs Tesla P90D

Tesla has introduced a Ludicrous Mode of acceleration that is making waves in the inter-webs at the moment. Just a quick YouTube search for it will result to hundreds of videos where Tesla Model S P90D owners showcase how crazy the car sounds when blasted off. On the Ludicrous Mode launch control system, the Model S P90D can reach 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds. That’s absolutely amazing and only hypercars can do that. On the other hand, BMW M4 is capable of 0-60 mph in around 3.9 seconds if the DCT gearbox and launch control is used. In a drag race, the M4 may seem like the obvious underdog. However, things are quite different in a rolling drag race. See below:

So what difference does a rolling drag race make? Well, for starters, the dynamics are different since launch control is negated. The Tesla P90D may have the same acceleration while moving but in these dynamics, the M4 can actually keep up.

Things would be completely different if it was not a rolling drag race. In a normal drag race, the M4 wold not have a chance. Tesla is faster at 762 hp while the M4 is just at 425 hp. Thanks to its turbocharged engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, this race did not end up that bad. It is lighter so it is able to keep up in many times during the race.

The BMW M4 still loses though. It’s just cool to see how the cars battled through the race even if the M4 was significantly down on power.
