BMW Mexico Plant Will be Able to Build RWD Models

The construction works on the BMW Mexico plant have officially started last week. As BMW officials report, the plant will produce the announced G20 3 Series line, but since it uses the new Cluster Architecture (CLAR), it could also be the place of birth for a much wider range of models.

The Automotive News Europe reports that the BMW board member for production, Oliver Zipse, confirmed that the new Mexican plant will be capable of building any crossover or a rear-wheel drive car. The capacity of the plant will be around 150,000 cars per year, which won’t leave plenty of room for other models besides the new 3 Series.

$1 billion has been invested in order for the plant to run successfully and to work under eco-friendly principles. The automakers claim that this facility will be the first one to have zero process wastewater. One of the ways to achieve that will be using the rainwater wherever suitable, for example in the cooling towers and washrooms. Many other measures will be taken to reduce the water consumption as much as possible. The factory’s paint shop will recycle water, too.
