BMW Group reports sales increase of 12.5% in August

The BMW Group breaks sales records yet again this August. A total of 103,239 BMW vehicles were delivered last month, a far cry from last year’s 91,800. Because of this, BMW enjoys 12.5% sales increase. In the span of eight months this year, the BMW Group has already delivered 919,258 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce units worldwide. Last year, it was just 817,203 units for the same time period.

BMW AG Board Management Member Ian Robertson said: “The August sales figures developed better than expected. We are seeing a stable upward trend and are gradually regaining the level we had prior to the economic and financial crisis. Our BMW brand not only sold 16.3% more automobiles year-on-year – for the first time, it also delivered more vehicles than in August 2007 (+3.6%) and 2008 (+3.1%). Asia – and China in particular – was the most powerful force driving our sales growth once again in August. We have already sold more than 106,000 BMW and MINI vehicles so far this year in China: This is more than in the whole of 2009. However, as the world’s leading premium automobile manufacturer, we aim to maintain a good balance between our Europe, Asia and Americas regions.”

The particular models that help bring retail gains to BMW are the 7 Series with a sales increase of 52.8% to 6,051 units (previous year 3,961), the 5 Series with a sales growth of 24.9% to 16,175 units sold (previous year 12,948), X5/X6 models climbed 36.4% to 12,707 units (previous year 9,316), and X3 with a sales increase of 10.3% to 3,936 units (previous year 3,570). The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring is also expected to give the 5 Series another major boost as orders for are already well above production plan.

Mini on the other hand enjoys a 4.1% increase in sales. A total of 142,529 MINI units sold, as compared to last year’s 136,879.

BMW Motorrad also enjoys continuous growth with a sales increase of 18.1%. At 6,405 units, 982 more motorcycles were sold than the same month last year. Year to the end numbers shows 73,442 units delivered, while the previous year was just 62,001 – gaining them a strong 18.5% increase.
