Intel and Mobileye are Joining BMW In Self-Driving Cars

This week, BMW will be announcing a meaningful alliance to help them develop the best self-driving cars in the market. The German automaker is joining forces with Mobileye, a collision detection specialist, and Intel, a world famous computer chip maker.

Mobileye is a company that already worked with Tesla Autopilot with its EyeQ chips. They are also working with other automakers in developing autonomous driving technology. The company focuses on developing a technology that will give computer-driven vehicles better reflexes without any form of driver input. These EyeQ5 chips are said to be powerful enough to enable level 4 fully-autonomous driving. The partnership with Intel will help a lot in bringing the technology to market.

A joint news conference will be held on Friday to announce this three-way partnership. BMW Chief Executive Harald Krueger, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich and Mobileye Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Amnon Shashua will be gracing the event.

Also a big development this week is the creation of a standard of how road and vehicle performance data is transmitted from Internet-connected cars to cloud-based online services. The standard as agreed upon by German carmakers, auto-suppliers and map makers HERE and TomTom. This milestone enables more automated traffic management and car management services.

BMW’s company goal is to launch a self-driving car by 2021 under the project name iNEXT.
