Flashback: 80s E30 M3 commercial

Flashback to the 80S: The E30 M3 is an iconic BMW. Having been built over the years, it is one of the crowd favorites. It was small and sporty, and the first one ever to be built under the 3 Series moniker.

Many years ago, the 1986 model year E30 3 Series was introduced to the market powered by a 2.3 liter inline-four engine delivering 192 horsepower. The engine was designed based on a number of BMW genealogy. It was created in a basic block layout inspired by the M10 4 cylinder, then found in the 2002 and 320 series. It was then overbored and reinforced to mimic the specs of the BMW M88 inline-6. In the final years of the E30 M3’s production, it had a 2.5 liter S14 engine in full race trim delivering an impressive 340 hp (250 kW) naturally aspirated.

More than just a sports car, the E30 M3 is a motoring icon. Its weight distribution is almost perfect. Slightly biased towards the front-end so the rear-end can drift out perfectly — giving a little bit of a lean on the throttle.

In 1988, it costs $34,000. If adjusted to today’s inflation rate, the cost is equivalent to almost $69,000. The video is German but it doesn’t remove the excitement of seeing a flashback of how the E30 M3 was introduced in late 80s. Cool, yet old school.
