A BMW M1 up for auction in Monterey

Like what you see in the photos below? Well, good news! This particular BMW M1 is scheduled to be up for auction in Monterey on August 19, 2016 at the Monterey Car Week 2016 event.

The price? The expected profit is around $450,000 and $600,000. It is worth noting that another BMW M1 was sold in 2006 and the price tag was around $150,000. This just proves how much BMW’s first supercar rose into popularity in the last decade.

The price tag is also justified by the rarity of the car. There are only 453 M1s ever built. It also features a timeless styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro which stands out in the crowd even to this day. That’s a great sign that this car’s appeal will stay for a long, long time. Any car collector would be privileged to get his hands on one.

When the BMW M1 was created, it was made road-legal so that BMW could race in Group 4 events. The regulations stated that at least 400 production cars were to be built for it to be allowed in the race and that is what the German automaker did.

Back then, the exterior design caused a stir. However, it impressed the crowd with technical features that were never seen before it launched. In fact, it was the first ever mid-engined BMW with to have an M88 unit. It eventually became the basis for powerplants used in other models like the E24 M6 and E28 M5.

True enough, this car for auction is genuinely the world’s first everyday supercar and BMW’s first ever M car. It was powered by a 3.5 liter inline-six engine mounted in the middle and mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Delivering 273 hp, it is still one of the most beautiful sounding supercars of all time.
