The cause for recall is a driveshaft that may not have been welded properly during manufacturing. That being said, the driveshaft may fracture and fail. The result is a loss of drive to the rear wheels and a loss of propulsion. Moreover, if the car is turned off and exited without the parking brake applied, there is a tendency to roll. Either of these results may lead to a crash risk.

BMW will notify owners so that dealers can inspect and replace the driveshaft as necessary. The fix will be free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on September 6, 2016.
