Stunning Red BMW 507 at Legends of Autobahn

In the past few weeks, people have heard more of the BMW 507 than in the past decade. Thanks to the BMW Classics’ revival of Elvis Presley’s white 507 roadster, people are more familiar to this variant more than ever. Here’s another one that made its way to the Legends of Autobahn event: a stunning red BMW 507.

During its time, many popular people owned and drove a 507. Actors Alain Delon and Ursula Andress, Olympic gold medalist Toni Sailer, Prince Rainier of Monaco, the kings of Greece and Morocco all had 507s, among others. It surely dominated in the 50’s and 60’s as the car for enthusiasts and the rich and famous.

This particular stunning red 507 made its way to the lawn at Legends of the Autobahn. It is a picture of an icon. Clearly, it is still one of the best looking BMW cars of all time. Truth be told, it is one of the best looking cars of all time.

The person responsible for the timeless design of the BMW 507 Roadster is Count Albrecht Goertz. He was a young German designer who was living in New York. He also designed the Datsun 240 Z-series.

The first time the world saw this car was in 1955 at New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel. It was powered by a new 3.2 liter V8 engine with Zenith dual-barrel carburetors, delivering 148 horsepower, matted to a four speed transmission that sent power to the rear wheels. It reached 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds and top speed was limited to 136 mph. In the 50’s, these were very impressive numbers!

Today, the BMW 507 Roadster is a collector’s item. The last 507 sold in the market was purchased at USD 2.4 million. Not bad considering inflation.
