Video: First BMW i8 Spyder Prototype Spotted Testing?

BMW CEO, Mr. Harald Krueger, spilled the beans a few months ago that the German automaker is planning to build a BMW i8 Spyder by 2018. That woke up the interest of enthusiasts about the future plans of BMW. Want to know what this car looks like? Here is a look at what seems to be the first ever prototype of the BMW i8 Spyder.

This video was taken near Nurburgring and then it was followed to the track where it was doing some laps. Based on what we can see, it really seems to be the open top version of the BMW i8. The roof cutouts is masked with camouflage but some of the edges on both the roof and the support beams can be seen quite clearly. We’d love to see how the folding of the roof will happen but as of now, that is still a mystery. It doesn’t really matter a lot if its done manually or automatically because BMW has proven to make the easiest decision for their customers all the time.

The engine will most likely remain the same. The first upgrade the BMW i8 may receive could happen after 2020, the earliest. This is when the car is scheduled to become fully electric and have at least 700 horsepower capacity.

The BMW i8 Spyder may have the same 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine but it is possible to use this together with an electric motor for a combined power level of at least 362 horsepower and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque.
