Track Battle: BMW M2 Versus Porsche Cayman S

Autocar did a comparison between the BMW M2 and the Porsche Cayman S to determine which is the best car for those who like to have the fastest track time.

In terms of specifications, both cars are really close. The Porsche Cayman S 718 is the automaker’s newest take on their icon. It is powered by a new 2.5-liter turbocharged engine delivering 350 HP and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque. When fitted with the automatic dual-clutch 7-speed PDK gearbox, it achieves 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 4.4 seconds in S variant. The standard Cayman does that in 4.9 seconds and that’s because it delivers 50 HP less.

The BMW M2 is powered by a reworked N55 3-liter straight six turbocharged engine delivering 370 HP and up to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. It is also capable of overboost or reaching its maximum potential only for short, 20-second bursts. Accelerating to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 4.3 seconds when using the 7-speed DCT gearbox or in manual, 4.5 seconds.

Though very closely matched, the Cayman S handled corners better and was slower on the straight. That can be attributed to the carbon ceramic brakes and adaptive dampers that’s not on the M2. If the layout of the track was slightly different, the M2 could still have won this race because the difference was so small. However, it is also important to note that the BMW M2 actually costs less than the Cayman S. So, the M2 can be a more practical purchase for some.
