Check out this video where Top Gear puts legends together: BMW 3.0 CSL vs M1 vs M535i vs 2002 Turbo. BMW has created many legends in their 100 years of operations. BMW enthusiasts often say that the 1970’s is the golden decade that produced the best BMW cars. So which one is the best of the best from this decade?
The 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL was based on the popular E9 chassis. It raced on the 1972 European Touring Car Championship and 1975 victory at Sebring. It looked gorgeous and was fun to drive.
Then the BMW 2002 Turbo launched in 1973. It was the first European production car to feature a turbocharger. It delivered 170 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque which was crazy at that time. It was very fun to drive, especially on high speeds.
The BMW M1 launched in 1978 and was iconic because of its brilliant engine. It was powered by a mid-mounted 3.5 liter naturally-aspirated I6 engine that delivered 273 hp.
Last but not the least is the BMW M535i. It used the same 3.5 liter I6 engine as the standard 535i but it had M-tech suspension, better brakes and amazing looks.
Top Gear looked at all of these cars and felt that the M1 was the best of the decade. Would you agree?
