Mainstream models to have BMW’s plug-in hybrids

BMW is already planning to have plug-in hybrids for all of its mainstream models by 2021. The current lineup includes the 740e, 330e and X5 xDrive40e and soon, there will be a lot more.

This will provide regular BMWs the ability to have an electrified powertrain while also having the range and usability of a standard car. Right now, it is still very expensive to implement the battery technology needed to make this happen. However, BMW is not stopping now.

One good example is the rumored electric variant of the upcoming-generation BMW X3. While there will likely be a plug-in hybrid X3 first, a purely electric vehicle will come after, maybe by 2019. MINI is also planning to develop its own electric vehicle by 2020. Thus, there will be two new electric vehicles even before the iNext project launches in 2021.
