News of the future BMW 6 Series’ three new chassis codes were released back in 2015. Apparently the 6 Series coupe (G15), 6 Series cabriolet (G14) and 6 Series Gran Coupe (G16) are the ones ones. However, BMW’s plans for their luxury lines have been updated and is now going on a new direction. The 6 Series Coupe and Convertible is about to move under the 8 Series badge. Today, news of the Gran Coupe variant being sold under the 8 Series badge name with the G16 chassis code is released.
Under the G16 chassis code, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is expected to arrive in 2018-2019.
For the 8 Series, BMW will initially offer two petrol powerplants found in the 840i and 850i, and two diesels – 830d and 840d. The top 8 Series model – presumably the 850i – will be powered by a 4.0 liter V8 turbocharged engine.
Back in May, it was discovered that the Munich-based company registered a few more nameplates for the 8 Series range, from 825 to 830, 835, 845, 850 to the M-branded M850 and M8.
The super high-end car will be one of the last BMWs to be built off the CLAR architecture, elements of which are used in the 3, 5, 6, and 7 Series. BMW will aim to make the 8 Series lighter and more agile than the S-Class two-doors, with significant interior space.
