5. B48 2.0 Liter Turbocharged Four-Cylinder:
The B48 powers many vehicles from the MINI line-up to the 740e. It wears many different hats in multiple BMW car models. Thankfully, the B48 is one of the best four-cylinder engines in the world. Being smooth, powerful, punchy and efficient are among its best features. Honestly, the sound is not that great but that does not discount what a great engine it is.

4. B57 Quad-Turbo 3.0 Liter I6 Diesel:
Despite having a 3.0 liters displacement and only six-cylinders, this wonder-engine is able to deliver 394 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. It does have four-turbochargers that make a difference but it is still impressive.Its best traits are being smooth and usable. It can be found in the BMW 750d and allows the large luxury sedan to get from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. That’s pretty amazing for a large, diesel-powered luxury car.

3. BMW i8’s Hybrid Powertrain:
The internal combustion engine plus the entire hybrid powertrain is amazing. The 1.5 liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine in the BMW i8 also powers the MINI Cooper. It has just been tuned to 228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. When combined with an electric motor, with another electric motor powering the front wheels, it is able to create a total system power output of 357 hp and 420 lb-ft. It allows the i8 to get from 0-60 mph in about 4.0 seconds. It can also can run on pure battery power and return 76 MPGe. The whole system is a marvel of engineering.

BMW M550i xDrive

2. BMW M550i 4.4 Liter V8:
The BMW M550i’s 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 delivers 462 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. That isn’t as much as the previous-generation F10 BMW M5 but it makes the all-wheel drive BMW M550i lighter and faster. BMW claims 0-60 mph will come in under 4 seconds. It allows for a good alternative to having a proper M car that’s way more expensive.

1. B58 3.0 Liter Turbocharged I6:
This is not the most complicated or most powerful BMW engine out there but it takes the top place among the best five because it is the best overall combination of power, refinement and cost. The B58 and is the smoothest and one of the best-sounding BMW engines. It gives out a refined growl that turns into a metallic scream at higher revs, reminding us of the old school engines from the German automaker. Used in the 2 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series, it is also incredibly flexible. It is fuel efficient, even in high speeds, and it isn’t crazy expensive.
