BMW and Intel autonomous driving cars launched

BMW Group and Intel announced a few months ago in January that they will be launching a fleet of approximately 40 autonomous driving cars in the second half of 2017. These cars will be the result of significant advancements made by their collaboration. Today, BMW and Intel held an event in the heart of Silicon Valley where they announced the kick-off of their autonomous driving cars trial. The self-driving cars are built on the 7 Series platform and uses technology from Intel’s latest acquisition, Mobileye.

The 40 cars are expected to be on the road before the year ends. They will be equipped with multiple Mobileye cameras for road scanning.

The partnership allowed BMW to be responsible for driving control and dynamics, plus the overall functional safety evaluation. BMW is setting up a high performance simulation engine to do this. BMW Group is also in charge of the overall component integration, production of prototypes and eventually scaling the platform via deployment partners.
