[Video] Learn the Difference Between Understeer & Oversteer

There are so many different terms used in the world of driving and racing. Understeer and oversteer are two very important words to be familiar with. Knowing the difference between the two can significantly help a driver be more prepared to combat any dangers behind the wheel. If your car understeers or oversteers suddenly, then it’s good to be prepared and know what to do! Here’s everything you need to know.

Understeer commonly happens with front-wheel drive cars because the front wheels are tasked with doing the accelerating and turning. It is the easier to correct between the two and less frightening. Just back off the throttle, reduce turning lock and wait for the tires to regain their grip and try again. Understeering doesn’t usually pose a risk for a crash.

Oversteer on the other hand it more dangerous and can be a cause of panic if the driver is not familiar with it. It happens when there’s not enough grip for the rear tires. The tires get overwhelmed, thus causing the back end of the car to rotate. Expert racers know how to control oversteer and they use it to have fun in safe environments. However, it is quite tough to manage it properly. The driver must counter steer by adding opposite steering lock and slightly back off the throttle. Without completely lifting off the throttle, the rear tires will then regain grip and launch the car in the opposite direction.
