[Video] BMW Digitalised Production: Self-Navigating Material Trains

BMW is not only working on developing self-driving cars, they are also focused on improving their manufacturing process through digitalised production. BMW calls their futuristic concept Industry 4.0. This pertains to a new level of technology integration within its plants. It makes the manufacturing process a lot easier by offering help to workers and making it more efficient. One of the main parts of this approach is the development of self-navigating material trains that have the ability to navigate around the manufacturing plants on their own. It allows the plant to deliver materials for assembly where they are needed. It may sound unbelievable, but check out this video of it in action:

BMW says this is only the beginning of their digitalised production and they have prototype of potential future autonomous trains that they plan to use soon. These machines will be instrumental in avoiding obstacles and choosing different routes depending on the purpose served. The self-navigating material trains are currently tested in the plants in Berlin, Leipzig and Dingolfing. BMW hopes that the initial test will be successful and they can roll out this feature to all of their plants.
