Marco Wittmann attended the BMW and MINI Driving Experience in Maisach to pass his DTM helmet to it’s new owner. Having significant sentimental value to Wittman, this helmet came from what he says was ‘the race of his life’. The special helmet was made for the two-time DTM champion for the fourth race weekend of the 2018 Norisring season. It was in this helmet that Wittmann crossed the victory libe at his home circuit in Nürnberg. The helmet has various images of the Norisring race and the BMW cars from his two championship-winning seasons in 2014 and 2016.
The draw for the new owner of this helmet was organized by BMW and MINI Driving Experience. For people to join the draw, they only needed to donate to charity. More than 5,000 euros in donations was raised for the chosen charity, Stiftung Kinderhilfe Fürstenfeldbruck, which has helped to integrate and support people with disabilities since 1969.
The lucky winner didn’t just go home with the helmet – he also was given a chance to experience what Wittmann is capable of behind the wheel in a series of driving exercises care of the BMW and MINI Driving Academy.
“It was a great day. It felt good to present the helmet to its new owner and to see how pleased he was with it,†said Wittmann. “I am sure the helmet is in good hands with him, and that it will be kept in a very special place. I would like to say another big thank you to him and all the other donors. I am delighted that we have raised such a large amount for charity. As well as the presentation of the helmet, the driving exercises were obviously another highlight of a wonderful day.â€
The 2019 DTM season’s opening race will happen at the Hockenheimring on May 4th. Wittmann now moves to focus on the necessary preparation, together with his five fellow DTM drivers, in Viareggio, Italy.
