[Video] BMW 1602 EV reinterpreted in the BMW 02 Reminiscence Concept

The increasing number of electric cars is a challenge for most car makers today. Nevertheless, the exploration of EVs is not a new trend. For example, BMW delved into this field ages ago with the 1602 Electro-Antrieb as their first presentation during the 1970s. Today, a reinterpretation of this model is made by famed car designer, David Obendorfer.

The desire of BMW to mark the Olympic Games held in Munich in 1972 led to the creation of their first electric car. This car was just the BMW 1602 but was geared with a large set of 12V batteries. Expectedly, the 1602 EV was far from being perfect with its disappointing range and speed. Nevertheless, this is the first stepping stone towards the creation of more advanced EV cars; 50 years after.

David Obendorfer created an interpretation of the original 1602 EV in his named BMW 02 Reminiscence Concept. Notably, the designer clarified that his aim was not to bring back all the features of the 02 Series but to create a “respectful reinterpretation”. Further, he described that the exterior and interior design explores a soft three-dimensionality that is far from the complicated surfaces and lines of its model. David also added that this kind of design is to tell that the car has zero emissions.

With David sharing the dimensions of the modern 1602 EV, means that its production could already be done. Accordingly, the dimensions are almost the same with a 2 series Coupe that has a 4510mm length, 1805mm width, 1400mm height and a wheelbase of 2730mm. Certainly, the BMW 02 Reminiscence Concept is a clear interpretation of the original 1602.
