According to NHTSA, BMW has recently restrained the sale on some 2020-2021 BMW and MINI plug-in hybrid vehicles as a battery issue has arise and could possibly affect a number of hybrids. Particularly, BMW concerns to the 713 vehicles sold in the U.S.. Although, it appears that the delivery of the vehicles barely even started yet. This is no different to the recall issue about the shipped 4,500 PHEV globally, which BMW AG confirmed last month.
As recorded, the returns include 644 2020-2021 BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid SUVs; 43 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid SUVs; 22 2021 BMW 330e plug-in hybrid sedans; and 4 2021 Mini Countryman SE All4 plug-in hybrid crossovers.
The BMW of North America has released a statement about the battery issue, and it might have been that some welding beads were left within the battery pack. Thus, the possibility of welding residues reaching between the modules.
According to BMW, “In an initial charging to at least 80% of full charge – depending upon the size, shape and position – the bead(s) can cause a conductive path between cells causing a short circuit. Which eventually can increase the risk of a fire.”
BMW dealers are set to give the battery pack an inspection and replace the modules, if necessary, for free. BMW also reported that a contact has already been made to the one affected owner.
Dealer notification began Aug. 18, and unaffected vehicles will shortly be back for sale.
