Comparing M Performance cars and their M Division siblings always reveal exciting stuff. The cheaper and less robust M Performance models have proven their worth in these face-offs. In this video, we see the reasons why BMW M550i is better than the BMW M5.
Various reviews presented the prowess of M Performance cars despite being less sporty than M Division models. Most of the time, they even provide better packages than the M Division cars. And this review features one favorite M Performance cars: the BMW M550i. Fans have expressed their enthusiasm for this car as an alternative to its M model, the M5.
Needless to say, the F90-gen BMW M5 still takes the trophy for a perfect all-rounder vehicle. However, the cheaper M550i also has its charms to be on par with the M5. It may not have the same capabilities as the M5, but it performs better than most luxury sedans. The M550i hides a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. And it generates a whopping 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Reaching 60mph only takes 3.6 seconds – faster than most luxury sedans. The BMW M5 sure performs way higher than this, but only a few would detect the difference.
Other reasons why BMW M550i is better than the BMW M5 include the following. First, the BMW M550i offers a more comfortable driving experience. Thanks to its softer suspension and bushings and more excellent NVH levels. Second, it feels swifter on a twisty road because of its rear-wheel steering. Though not as fast as the M5, the M550i feels more nimble with its smaller turning circle ability. This detail stays relevant for those living in cities with narrow roads. And it still gives the M Performance car a plus point in the comparison.
Admittedly, the BMW M5 still sits way higher than the M550i in the excitement level. It feels more fun and performs more powerful than the M Performance car. However, in areas such as comfort and refinement, the BMW M550i outshines the supercar-M5. It carries its charms and uniqueness that may appear more attractive than its more robust sibling.
