BMW i3 still surpasses most compact EVs

Critics have expressed their doubts over the BMW i3. And buyers are skeptical about this new EV as well. But Top Gear believes that the BMW i3 still surpasses most compact EVs in today’s market.

Even though the 4 Series takes most of the negative reviews, the i3 still receives criticisms. Not just from the media, some EV buyers also regard the i3 as the lesser EV. Most of the reasons point at its shorter range and power to compete with its rivals. Especially because compact EVs flocked the market in 2020. And these EVs boast and compete on their range at lower prices. Nevertheless, Top Gear argues that the BMW i3 surpasses most newcomers.

Based on size and range, the i3 directly competes with the Honda e and Fiat 500. Of course, the i3 costs more than the other two. But it also provides more fun and premium driving experience than the others. Out of the two, the Honda e is the closest competitor of the BMW i3. Both EVs have the same bespoke, rear-wheel drive electric platform. And both costs a lot. The Honda e indeed looks better and has a futuristic interior like the i3. But the Bimmer is still the better EV. It has the same spacious funky interior and fun feel, but it weighs lighter than the Honda e. And a fully charged i3 goes further beyond what the Honda e can achieve.

When it comes to the range, TG argues that i3’s range does not pose a real problem. Most EV buyers noted the i3’s range as a disadvantage. But the i3’s 140 miles on a charge is enough for long journeys. Also, with a quick charging battery, it only takes less than an hour to charge the Bimmer from zero to full.

Interestingly, the i3 can still compete with the new EVs released in 2020. Despite the criticisms and skepticism against the Bimmer, it proves to be an efficient car.
