[Video] G82 BMW M4 and the F82 BMW M4 weight comparison

Aside from the polarizing grille, many fans question the weight of the new BMW M3 and M4. Compared to their predecessors, these new siblings weigh heavier. This video features the  G82 BMW M4 and the F82 BMW M4 for weight comparison.

Despite the lightweight materials used for the new M3 and M4, they are heavier than the old models. And even though the weight increase is only small, fans still criticize this difference. This video then explains the weight difference of the G82 BMW M4 and the F82 BMW M4. For starters, almost all successors in the industry weigh more than their predecessors.

With more technologies, new models tend to weigh heavier to meet stricter safety standards. But BMW M managed to keep the weight increase at a minimum. In this part, we just need to applaud the BMW M engineers. They even offer more lightweight additionals like carbon-fiber bucket seats. Aluminum door and hood skins can even make the new models even lighter.

Still, BMW M needed to stiffen the chassis, which added to the new model’s weight. BMW M did some specific structural bracing under the hood and underneath the cars. And these amounted to a significant weight change.

In this video, the old F82 BMW M4 used in this video had a DCT transmission. On the other hand, the new G82 BMW M4 had a lighter six-speed manual. Their weight amounted to 1,640 kg (3,615 lbs) for F82 and G82 had 1,674 kg (3,690 lbs). Obviously, the increase does not really surprise anyone.

Basically, the G82 BMW M4 used here has the lightest specs possible for the new M4. First, has a manual transmission, and second, it has a rear-wheel-drive setup. With a different tuning, the G82 M4 can even weigh around 1,800 (4,000 lb). For example with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive setup.

Nevertheless, this video showed that the new G82 BMW M4 could weigh lighter with the right spec. So take note of a rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox, and lightweight seats if you want a lightweight new-gen M4.
