True to their electrification plans, BMW launches more new plug-in hybrids. The BMW 3 Series and 5 Series will release their entry-level plug-in hybrid model in March.
For the 3 Series, four plug-in hybrid models will roll in the market. Also, three of them will feature optional xDrive. As for the BMW 5 Series, it will produce five electrified vehicles. Overall, the BMW Group will release 16 plug-in hybrid vehicles from March 2021. This list includes 15 BMW models and one MINI model. BMW launches more EVs, intending to offer 25 new EVs by 2023.
Under the hood, both the upcoming BMW 320e and 520e packs a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine. Coupled with an electric motor, this powertrain produces up to 150 kW/204 hp. For rear-wheel-drive, the engines transmit their torque with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. And for an all-four-wheel-drive, the xDrive system helps in the transmission. Overall, it can reach a maximum torque of 350 Nm.
As for the lithium-ion batteries, it will offer a gross energy content of 12.0 kWh. Both hybrids will receive batteries with a 34 Ah capacity. The WLTP test cycle confirmed an electric range of 48 to 57 kilometers for the 320e Sedan. For the 320e Touring, the electric range falls from 46 to 54 kilometers. As for the 520e Sedan, it ranges from 41 to 55 kilometers. And 45 to 51 kilometers for the 520e Touring.
This reliable high-voltage battery can charge from 0 to 80 percent of its total capacity in 2.6 hours. And it will take 3.6 hours for a full 0 to 100 percent charge.
Even with the battery placed below the rear, both the 320e and 520e have generous rear space. The 320e Sedan has 375 liters of space, while 410 liters can fit in the 520e Sedan. Also, a boot space of 410 to 420 liters can be adjusted for the BMW 320e Touring. And 430 to 560 liters of space for the new BMW 520e Touring.
