MINI Electric Pacesetter as Official FIA Formula E Safety Car

The current MINI JCW JP’s powertrain is its weakest link, yet it is still a capable car. However, excitement comes for enthusiasts after learning that there would be an all-electric version of it. So, the idea of swapping the older version for an electric powertrain could make the performance better. The German automaker decided to make an FIA Formula E Safety Car out of one – the MINI Electric Pacesetter. Giving us a bit of a taste of what the MINI Electric JCW GP will be.

The MINI Electric Pacesetter has the resemblance of the JCW GP for its styling. It is painted rather than exposed carbon fiber and similar wheels but in a different color scheme. The LED lights in the hood are slick, along with the MINI Electric plug logo on its roof. It also has the same fender blades and roof spoiler. The only difference is it has a massive light bar on top.

Furthermore, the MINI Electric Pacesetter comes from 3D printed recycled carbon fiber and is indeed a good move. From its fender blades, aero on the exterior, and rear wing, not only did the automaker make it lighter but also greener. Fit enough for an electric pace car.

Everything from the inside seems out of carbon fiber, including the center console and the steering wheel. It replaced the typical infotainment system with a fiber circle that reads “Be Safe, Stay Healthy.” The Pacesetter does not have back seats like the MINI JCW GP.

What is more interesting is the seat design. Its racing buckets are also made from carbon fiber yet having 3D-printed removable cushions as well. Due to the green movement by MINI, it shaved a lot of weight compared to the MINI Cooper SE. It weighs about 130 kg less than the former. It is even quicker now, doing 6.7 seconds to 60 mph than its standard 7.3 seconds, thanks to that shaved weight.

The new MINI Electric Pacesetter will be featuring sharper dynamics and will be sitting lower than usual. Want to see the MINI Electric Pacesetter in live-action? Stay tuned for the inaugural run at the Rome E-Prix on April 10. Enthusiasts have their hopes up that it might be a signal of what future MINIs would be.
