Thoughts About the New 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe

Giving different journos a chance to test cars before finalizing the entire unit is BMW’s M.O for the past few years. Journos got the chance to spend some time behind the wheels of the next-gen 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe in camouflage. Of course, those are pre-production test mules, and it is not unusual to have new cars pre-tested for BMW. The idea could be to get some feedback for the finishing touches on a car’s tuning. This time, European journalists again had the opportunity to drive this new 2 Series.

Media members were able to drive both the BMW M240i and 230i at Autobahn and some twisty back roads. The more powerful M240i here packs 367 horsepower, while the latter has 242 horsepower. This M240i gets the xDrive all-wheel-drive setup as standard, while the 230i matches with a rear-wheel-drive. For the test drive, both cars use automatic gearboxes.

Journalists find the new 2 Series impressive as it comes with improved chassis rigidity and a better balance of control and rides comfort. It also has far superior steering than the previous generation cars.

“The most noticeable improvement from the driver’s seat, however, is the steering. It delivers added precision, and the weighting is much more constant off-centre,” says Greg Kable from Autocar. With that added negative camber for the front wheels, there is added eagerness to the turn-in, too.”

George Kacher from Car Magazine shares the same feeling as well, despite driving it on a rainy weather. “Unperturbed by these topographic irritations, the M240i tracked like a slot racer on suction-cup tires,” says Kacher. “Its steering felt meatier and heavier than the four-cylinder specimen sampled in the dry afternoon, but there was no trade-off in terms of precision and feedback.”

Overall, it seems that this new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe is what many fans have been hoping for. A small, dynamic, sporty rear-wheel-drive coupe matched with all of BMW’s classic coupe hallmarks. Many would surely want to test it on by themselves.
