G42 BMW M240i Will Get A Rear-Wheel-Drive Variant

BMW recently introduced the all-new 2 Series Coupe G42 generation. This lineup is set to launch two models: the 220i Coupe for Europe (230i for the U.S.) and the top model M240i xDrive. With regards to the rear-wheel-drive M240i, the Bavarians omitted to provide specific details. Meanwhile, a BMW of North America spokesperson reported that the rear-wheel-drive G42 BMW M240i would arrive between late this year or early 2022. It would fall on the same schedule as the xDrive all-wheel-drive 230i Coupe. This leaves us with the options between 220i and 230i Coupe if looking for a rear-wheel drive.

Moreover, the same spokesperson reported that none of the 2 Series Coupe variants would get the six-speed manual transmission. Considering its demand in the United States, that’s actually a big loss. But, we also know that the manual gearbox was being slowly phased out in all global markets for years. It’s only the U.S. market and its patrons who are keeping it alive to this day.

So, whether the upcoming G87 M2 will get a six-speed manual or just an eight-speed automatic remains a question. But the BMW enthusiasts community hopes the M Division will continue to cater to their appeals. Most especially since the last petrol-powered M2 would probably be the G87.

The G42 2 Series is set to enter the market in November 2021. Stay tuned for more details!
