Auto Express Tests BMW i4 with its Rivals Polestar and Tesla

There are several electric cars on the market, but the Tesla Model 3 remained unchallenged above all. Compared to the Model 3, none of these cars has the same combination of size, power, range, usability and affordability. For quite some time, it was the only electric luxury sports sedan on the market. But now there are two excellent alternatives: the BMW i4 and the Polestar 2. Can either of them dethrone Tesla?

You will get to see that same three-way comparison test in this new Auto Express test. Three cars will compete against each other: BMW i4 eDrive40, Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor and Tesla Model 3.

The Polestar is the cheapest of the three cars, and the BMW i4 is by far the most expensive. In addition, Tesla is the only car with two motors and all-wheel drive. While the Polestar 2 has a single engine and front-wheel drive, the BMW i4 has a single engine and rear-wheel drive. The BMW has the best usable battery capacity with 80.7 kWh. Followed by the Polestar 2 with 78 kWh and the Tesla with 75 kWh.

Moreover, the Tesla Model 3 offers the best-stated range of 375 miles, despite having the smallest battery capacity. The BMW i4 comes in second with 365 miles, while the Polestar 2 comes in last with 336 miles. Although the ranking remained constant, none of the vehicles reached their maximum range in Auto Express’ tests.

With the smallest battery, one more electric motor than the other two and the highest power, the Tesla Model 3 achieved the most fantastic range. The Model 3’s 434 hp is significantly more than the 335 bhp of the BMW i4 and far more than the Polestar 2’s 228 hp.

Auto Express actually got both cars for testing and did not just compare their technical data. A slight difference in efficiency is less important than the way they drive. So can the dynamics of the BMW i4’s Ultimate Driving Machine or the charm of the Scandinavian Polestar 2 beat the Tesla? To find out, check out Auto Express’ comparison test.
