In the BMW i4 model range, only the i4 eDrive40 and the i4 M50 are currently available. The latter is the most popular because it is the fastest and most powerful. The i4 M50 is just as fast as a BMW M3 Competition, although it is cheaper – so you can see why it is so popular. That’s why many enthusiasts and journalists believe that the less expensive and less powerful BMW i4 M50 is even better to drive.
Joe Achilles tests the new BMW i4 eDrive40 in this new video. It’s interesting because he thought the eDrive40 would be better after driving the i4 M50. On paper, the ’40 should be less entertaining. The i4 M50’s twin-engine (all-wheel drive) configuration delivers 536 hp and 586 lb-ft of torque.
Much of the BMW i4 eDrive40’s weight loss occurs above the nose. So it’s lighter and lays down more readily. The M50 is heavy and can feel clunky in corners, so it feels cleaner. It also feels more like a BMW sedan without driven front wheels.
The BMW i4 is worth considering, although Achilles advises going for the eDrive40. And it has a longer range, around 300 miles, than the M50. It hits 60mph in less than five seconds, and Achilles believes it feels even faster. Is the cheaper car better? And we are curious to find out.
