BMW i7 was the big attraction when the 7 Series debuted in 2023. The 740d xDrive’s 3.0-liter inline-six is geared towards the European market, where diesels are popular. In addition, the 48V mild-hybrid technology in the eight-speed automatic transmission is the most visible innovation.

This diesel engine generates 286 hp (210 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 650 Nm (479 lbft) of torque at 1,500 rpm. The e-motor may produce up to 18 HP (13 kW) and 200 Nm. All all, the new 740d xDrive is capable of producing 300 hp and 670 Nm of peak torque.

The powertrain’s freshly developed steel pistons increase combustion pressure and provide a aggressive exhaust noise. BMW claims that its engineers have made the oil separation procedure more efficient. The new common-rail direct injection system can make up to 12 injections each power stroke at 2,500 bar.

The 740d xDrive can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds thanks to its upgraded diesel engine and mild-hybrid setup. For a vehicle that weighs 2,180 kg, it’s not bad at all. Considering that the new 7 Series is longer and heavier than its predecessor, the inline-six diesel engine’s efficiency is remarkable. The combined cycle fuel economy under the WLTP standard is as low as 6.1 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of 160 g/km. Already available to order in Germany, the 2023 BMW 740d xDrive is scheduled to enter production in November.
