The BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe are two of the most thrilling performance sedans on the market. When it comes to the Munich Competition model and Affalterbach 63 S, their impressive horsepower makes them heavyweight luxury bruisers. In a wet drag race, these cars are sure to impress.
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S has been modified by Brabus, giving it an extra 75 hp and 250 Nm. However, the BMW M5 comes with a factory twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine that delivers impressive power. The AMG GT 63 S has a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that produces a monstrous 700 hp and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft). But it also weighs about 200 kilograms (441 pounds) more than the M5.
The wicked AMG was significantly quicker off the line that day, forcing the Snapper Rocks Blue M5 to settle for second place. That’s not to say the BMW was slow; it still accelerated from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.18 seconds. This is impressive, given that the manufacturer’s stated official time under ideal circumstances is 3.4 seconds.
The family-friendly speedster from BMW reached speeds between 62 and 124 mph (100 and 200 km/h) in 7.21 seconds. It also ran the quarter mile in 10.96 seconds. Near the end of the drag race, it appeared to be gaining on the AMG GT 63 S, but not by enough to make up the lost ground.
This conflict wasn’t totally fair in the end. A regular AMG GT 63 S or an M5 with a tune or an M5 CS, the latter of which was recently upgraded by Manhart to more than 700 hp and would make it a viable opponent for this Brabus, would have made more sense to even the odds.
