We’re eagerly awaiting the corresponding 4 Series cars to undergo a nip and tuck after BMW gave the 3 Series a Life Cycle Impulse in 2022. The lineup could lose a car if a recent rumor from a well-known business source is to be believed. This source says that the rear-wheel-drive M440i is reportedly being discontinued. According to reliable sources, as soon as the LCI is ready, M Performance 4 Series cars will only be sold with xDrive. This was reported by Bimmer Post forum member ynguldyn.
The G22 Coupe, G23 Convertible, and G26 Gran Coupe are the three 4 Series vehicles that might be affected by the prospective discontinuance. If accurate, the M440i will actually cost more because the AWD variant costs $2,000 more than the RWD equivalent. For the 2023 model year, the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe starts at $59,450; the M440i xDrive Coupe starts at $60,250; and the M440i xDrive Convertible starts at $68,250.
According to the same source, BMW plans to begin producing the 4 Series LCI in March 2024. This is specifically for the Coupe and Convertible. The Gran Coupe then follows in July. You still have plenty of time to get an M440i with RWD. The Life Cycle Impulse for the 4 Series might also showcase cosmetic changes for the M3 and M4 models.
BMW is believed to transition all three 4 Series body types to the iDrive 8 with vehicles built. This starts in March of this year, prior to the implementation of the LCI. An xDrive40 with 400 horsepower is anticipated to join the i4 lineup in the US. Apparently, this begins in the second part of the year. According to reports, the Munich-based carmaker plans to continue making the three 4er models through June 2028. Alongside this, the production of the M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible is also set to stop.
Although the RWD version of the M440i vehicles is reportedly going away starting in 2019, the M340i didn’t lose it when the makeover was shown in 2022. The M Performance sedan is still available with or without xDrive, with the latter costing $2,000 extra.
